Engagement Photos Edmonton - Here is Some Dreamy Inspo

Kevin Fearn • June 8, 2024

For you engaged couples out there, here are some dreamy inspiration pics and some tips as you plan for engagement photos in Edmonton.

I’m warning you now, prepare those eyes for a breathtaking couple.

Edmonton Engagement Photos

This beautiful couple was one of four engagement photoshoots within a week of each other.

When the warm weather hits, it's that time of year to get those photos done to promote your wedding day before the wedding season approaches!

I must say, this beautiful couple was an absolute blast—look at them! She showed up in her lovely, long, elegant dress, and he showed up looking spiffy, rocking some white, casual shoes.

Not only did they turn out looking fabulous with matching outfits, but they also came prepared to love each other and have a fun time.

They came with a cool, relaxed, playful and stunning vibe and we laughed and laughed throughout this entire session.

And we laughed some more. Such a fun time!

If you've never been on a couples photoshoot, you're missing out.

It's a super fun date night...with a photographer as the third wheel, of course.

Don't have too much fun as you make memories to remember your love story forever.

Prepare for the Weather

If you're planning an Edmonton-based wedding or your engagement session, don't forget to consider the weather here.

You never know in Edmonton if one side of the city will be raining or the other is sunny. It can literally be snowing on that same day, too. the AC is on in your car, and a few minutes later, you have the heat on.

A good way to prepare for this is if you plan on wearing a dress to your shoot, bring a jacket to wear as you walk in between the different locations to shoot.

Don't be scared to be warm and comfy in between. It's easy to throw it to the side when the pictures start.

Your seasoned photographer should have a blanket, but bring one just in case...unless you like to sit on wet grass.

The Alberta Legislature Grounds

Edmonton, Alberta, has many great photo spots, but this session was taken near downtown Edmonton at the
Alberta Legislature Grounds.

If you can catch the sunset at golden hour, it's absolutely beautiful. It's the perfect place for you soon-to-be wedding couples.

At this location, we had two couples back-to-back celebrating their recent engagement. One session started off cloudy, then quickly turned into quite the downpour — which also turned out amazing. It doesn't happen often, but if you get stuck in the rain, make the most of it!

As soon as the second couple showed up, the sun just started to peek through, and we got some breathtaking engagement photos starting on the south side of the Alberta Legislature building.

As a
wedding photographer, you never know what weather you'll encounter. It can be sunny one minute and then rainy the next. A good photographer will have umbrellas, but bring yours just in case.

This is not easy to plan, but if I could predict when the rain would end, I'd take my couples here every time to catch the sky's reflection on the shiny pavement.

Planning your Engagement Photos

Either you just got engaged, or you're planning a surprise, but it's completely worth capturing these moments before the big day.

When looking for an Edmonton engagement photographer, I recommend looking for one with wedding photography in their portfolio.

You know you'll get an experience where all you need to worry about is looking good and having fun.

Who knows, you may even hire them for your future wedding photos, and this is a perfect way to try how they work with you and go through the experience.

Some photographers even offer a free engagement shoot as part of their wedding packages, so ask about this.

Ideas and Inspiration Poses for Your Engagement Photos

Not every couple is willing to jump right in, completely comfortable and ready to try every pose, but if that's you, go for it!

This couple was extremely comfortable in front of the camera, but this isn't always the case.

The photographer should be able to match your energy and guide and direct as required throughout.

Never feel like you need to be the one to figure out what to do, this is the photographer's job.

Here are some poses that
Shayna guided and directed. Reference these for future inspiration!

By the way, my 7-year-old daughter helped me name the poses - so I can't take credit...

Hiring the Right Engagement Photographer in Edmonton

Editing Style

Consider their editing style. Find a photographer who provides the look that you love.

Go through their website,
Instagram, or Facebook page, and check out their portfolio.

Do they have a warm, golden hour vibe, or is it more dark and moody?

There is no wrong answer here, but make sure it's a style you love!

Experience

Every Edmonton photographer is completely different in their work, and sometimes you don't know until you meet them.

Do they showcase their personality to tell how they interact with their clients and if you'll connect well with them?

Have they worked with other couples before on an engagement photo session?

Can they guide and direct confidently? Do they have fun sessions?

It's okay if you can't tell before going on an engagement shoot, but you'll have a good idea of their experience when looking through their work.

Another key place to also check is their Google reviews.

Look through and find the testimonials that relate to how the couple felt after their session and check all those 5-star reviews.

What are Some Good Locations for Edmonton Engagement Photography?

Edmonton River Valley

Other Edmonton photographers recommend the Edmonton River Valley, which has many beautiful spots, including this lovely swing along the river.

It can be a bit of a walk, but well worth it as you can go right down to the water and find a quiet spot. It's also amazing if you can turn it into a fun sunset engagement session as you adventure along the way.

The Muttart Conservatory

The Muttart Conservatory is another well-known location for an Edmonton engagement session with the city skyline in the background.

The unique glass pyramids give a fancy, elegant, and modern vibe that makes it worthy of its own style.

This is also a very popular location for wedding portraits.

Here are some more with a beautiful reflection and the Edmonton skyline.

Honorable Mentions

Other honorable mentions include the University of Alberta Botanical Garden or the Mill Creek Ravine if you prefer an outdoor adventure session.

If you like the urban vibe, try
Manchester Square, which feels like a European getaway in the middle of our city.

Another urban style could be the
Walterdale Bridge near downtown, which would work well.

Combine any of these Edmonton, AB locations with the right photographer, and you'll be set up perfectly for a stunning engagement photography session or a cute couples session.
